I had the honor of working with Dove™ Hair as a Dove Partner for this amazing campaign about loving your hair and promoting that positivity within your daughter(s).
Me and my daughter have biracial hair. And sometimes, while it’s in it’s natural state it does not always reflect the depiction of what “beautiful hair” traditionally looks like. Dove™ Hair found that 8 in 10 women feel pressure to wear their hair a certain way. For many, this pressure can start at a young age. I would be one of those 8 women that have felt that pressure and I noticed my daughter experiencing the same thing at a very young age, as early as 2.
My daughter was born with jet black hair. I’ve never seen hair this dark. But it didn’t last. By two, her hair had turned from black, to blond to a copper red. With her being in a sense, “try” racial, we often times didn’t know what to do with this fiery red hair as she was growing up. But one thing we did know, is it attracted a lot of attention.
While out shopping and running errands people would often stop us and ask what color did I use on her hair to dye it. It became so often that my baby, very young at the time, would yell out to people “No dye, my pretty hair!” while touch her hair.
As a mother, I did not want her to experience the same thing I did. I wanted her to grow up feeling confident with the hair that she grows. So I encouraged her to love her hair. I started calling it “princess hair” and would encourage her to wear it any way that she felt comfortable. Curly, straight, ponytail or even wild all over her head like a lion. I wanted her to love her hair any and every way that it grew from her beautiful head.
That’s why I wanted to be a part of this amazing and uplifting campaign. Dove™ Hair is committed to broadening the definition of beautiful hair, ensuring that hair is a source of confidence.
As a mother, you can make a difference and help ensure she grows up feeling confident. Celebrate the beauty of your daughter’s hair today–so she loves her hair tomorrow.
Tell her why you love her hair and inspire her to do the same by creating and sharing a custom #LoveYourHair animated message with @Dove
